Our garden area consists of several components. We have a small herb garden full of oregano and lavender, many woolly pockets hanging from our garden walls,a fruit orchard, and a raised redwood garden bed.
Our garden was recently featured in the L.A. Times!
1/5 - Started the planting process with Farmer Lowell and Farmer Laura. We planted cauliflower, beets, sweet carrots, lettuce, bok choy and more. Al of the students had a chance to plant seeds and a starter plant.
2/15 - The seeds that we planted are all beginning to sprout, and we love to look at the tiny green carrot tops. We also planted wildflower seeds in our vertical gardens, and we are hoping they will grow.
3/14 - Our garden is huge! Some of the veggies are ready for harvesting and we have been enjoying radishes, bok choy and lettuces for several weeks. We are all very excited to pull out our first beets soon.
5/9 - We have spent the last few weeks harvesting cauliflower, carrots and lettuce. Our wildflowers have been blooming, and everyone had a chance to taste an edible flower petal. We have planted a tomato plant, and it is getting taller every day! We look forward to Farmer Lowell's visits every Monday afternoon!
6/3 - We spotted our first super tiny tomato this morning! It is round and green and doesn't look like much yet, but it was still exciting. Our zucchini blossoms have wilted, and while it was fun to spot the big yellow flowers in the garden, it is even more fun to watch our green zucchini get bigger and bigger and bigger! Our cabbage looks like it is almost ready to harvest as well.
7/19 - We have noticed that our watermelon vine is getting longer each day! We have been picking small, red and ripe tomatoes each morning, and they are very juicy!
8/22 - The students just found our first "baby watermelon!" It is the size of a dime but it already looks very melon-y :) Our pumpkin vine is getting very big, and we continue to harvest dozens of tomatoes each and every morning. We have also noticed the first of our prickly cucumbers, but we can only look, not touch! Today we experimented with planting seeds. We each planted one watermelon seed, and even though it is late in the season, we are hoping that a few of them will grow.
9/25 - We just started to plant some new seeds in our garden. We took out most of our tomato plants and finally had to remove our pumpkin and watermelon vines, sadly we didn't get any this year!
11/14 - Our seeds are starting to sprout! Last week we harvested the last of our juicy red tomatoes, and we still have one large bell pepper that is almost ready for picking. Everyone is having a lot of fun helping Farmer Lowell with tending our garden every Monday morning.
1/9 - Today we harvested our first vegetables of the new year! Everyone had a chance to sample the long greens from the onions, and then we cut out our first head of broccoli! We can't wait to harvest the purple cauliflower that is growing bigger and bigger each day.
2/1 - We have begun to prepare for our Farmer's Market, and we are holding off on harvesting the majority of our garden until next week. However, few items needed to be picked! We pulled out our purple cauliflower, some broccoli, and plenty of peas. We have all been eating lots of chives, radishes, and the edible leaves of many plants when Farmer Lowell comes to visit us each week.
3/1 - We have harvested almost our entire garden. All that remains are a few carrots, some peas, and some lettuce. We can't wait to plant the rest of our vegetables for Spring and Summer at the end of the month!
6/10 - After a few long months of patiently waiting, our garden is finally rewarding us with some delicious cucumbers! We all had a chance to try our crunchy cucumbers today, and they were amazing! We can't wait for our tomatoes to ripen, and we would love to get a watermelon this year as well!
7/2 - Our tomatoes are getting bigger, we are harvesting large cucumbers almost every day, and our melon is the size of a baseball! We are having a lot of fun looking around for worms each week, and also looking for new sprouts in the dirt.
10/11 - Now that our summer harvest is over, we are looking forward to planting some winter vegetables. We were able to harvest and eat two watermelons this season! They were both delicious and sweet.
1/28 - We are looking forward to Spring, when our garden will be full of new veggies and ready to harvest!
9/1 - After our summer full of beautiful tall sunflowers growing in our garden, we are getting ready to plant our fall harvest. We are figuring out what to plant, and getting our garden box ready for the fresh seeds and small plants. We can't wait to see what we will grow.
2/25- Our winter garden has been planted and it is growing well! We planted tomatoes, peas, broccoli and rosemary, and we are looking forward to our first harvest in a month or so. We are also preparing for our annual farmer's market next month, and hope that we have some things to pick by then!
